Healthy Sleep Starts With A Non-Toxic Mattress
*updated December 2023*
IÂ found the healthiest, organic and non-toxic mattresses for my family.
When my daughter was newborn, we were looking to purchase a new mattress. I researched for hours to find the safest and most natural materials and brands. It is important to me that the mattress we sleep on is free from any harmful or toxic chemicals.Â
“We had NO IDEA the mattress we were sleeping on every night had harmful chemicals that could impact our health.”
Â
Harmful Materials In Common Mattresses
We spend about one-third of our lives sleeping. That is why choosing a healthy mattress is SO important. Most older mattresses contain some toxic chemicals that can negatively impact our health. Luckily, there are new brands that are creating healthier alternatives.
NEGATIVE HEALTH IMPACTS:
Off-Gassing is the major area of concern. This is the release of chemicals into the air. That’s why the toxic chemicals in our mattress are so important to avoid.
Toxic VOCs can lead to health problems such as hormone imbalances, headaches, breathing problems, memory impairment, and damage to the central nervous system. Some VOCs can cause cancer. *1
What to avoid:
- Polyurethane Foam
- Toxic Glues (can offgass toxic VOCs)Â
- Flame Retardants (and PBDEs)Â
- Formaldehyde
- Synthetic MaterialsÂ
Â
Choosing A Healthy, Non-Toxic Mattress
When choosing a mattress, look for an organic one. I wanted to make sure the materials were all certified organic and non-toxic. I also looked into every single piece that makes up the mattress including glues or stitching… I did HOURS and hours of research.
What to look for when choosing a healthier mattress:
- ORGANIC Natural Materials (cotton and wool)
- Natural materials won’t offgas VOCs
- GOTS & GOLS Certified
- Free from flame retardantsÂ
- Free from toxic glueÂ
Â
My Favourite Non-Toxic Mattresses:
1. NaturepedicÂ
One of my favourite natural, non-toxic, organic mattress companies. They are definitely worth the investment. Whether you are choosing a King size mattress for the whole family, or kids mattresses, they have non-toxic natural options for the whole family.
- Free of all flame retardants
- No Polyurethane Foam
- Certified Organic Materials
- GOTS Certified
- GOLS Certified
- MADESAFE (nontoxic) certified
- GREENGUARD Certified
- No glues or adhesives
ALL of their mattresses are a great option depending on your budget. Get FREE shipping through my link:

2. My Green Mattress
Another great non-toxic, organic mattress company. The only downside is they do not have a Canadian website, but they do ship to Canada.Â
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification
- GOLS Certified for all latex mattresses
- Certified Organic Wool and Cotton
- All organically grown, harvested and processed materials
I own their HOPE LATEX, coil-free mattress in a King size and really enjoy it. It is made from GOLS certified organic Dunlop latex. I would recommend a firmer option if this mattress is for the whole family though.
MyGreenMattress has latex-free options, and Hybrid spring mattresses as well.Â

Takeaways
When searching for a new mattress, always look into the materials used and make sure it is FREE of flame retardant chemicals. Wool is a great natural flame resistant material that is used now.
Make sure the company uses organic materials and look for the GOTS certification, which is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres.
Making a purchase for a mattress is a big commitment, so make sure it is a HEALTHY one for your family. I appreciate when you shop through my links, as it allows me to continue sharing free natural living content with you all.
Yours in health,
Carlie
